How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF

Finalize the page order first. Then choose the pages, position, number format, and starting value so the visible numbering matches the finished document.
Visible page numbers are new content on the page. They are separate from the page count a PDF viewer shows.
How it works
- Finish merging, deleting and reordering pages.
- Choose the PDF and select the pages to number.
- Set the position, format and start value.
- Check pages where an existing footer may overlap the number.
- Apply the numbers and open the result.
Printed numbers and viewer page counts
A viewer may call the cover “page 1” even when printed numbering starts later. Adding visible numbers does not change the viewer’s count.
The start value is the number of the document’s first page. A volume that continues after 400 pages starts at 401, so its third page prints as 403.
Keep numbers clear of content
Check pages with footnotes, signatures, stamps or full-bleed artwork. Choose a corner or margin that stays clear, and look at both portrait and landscape pages.
Frequently asked questions
Can I start numbering after the cover?
Yes. Select the pages you want numbered. Each page shows its position in the full document, so the first numbered page prints its real position unless you change the start value.
