How it works
- Choose one PDF.
- Select pages and output resolution.
- Export and download the PNG files.
Key benefit
PNG is lossless and works well for screenshots, diagrams, and sharp text edges.
Supported files and key limits
Input: PDF. Output: PNG images in a ZIP when multiple pages are selected.
PNG files can be much larger than JPG for photographs or scanned pages.
Sharp pages, larger files
Export selected pages as sharp, lossless PNG images. PNG is best for text, diagrams, and screenshots; JPG usually produces smaller files for photographs and scans.
JPG compression was designed for photographs, where colour changes gradually. A page of text is the opposite, with hard black-on-white edges everywhere, and JPG adds faint halos around them that get worse each time the file is re-saved. PNG stores what was rendered exactly and has no quality setting to trade. The cost is size. A PNG of a text page is usually several times larger than the JPG, and a photographic scan can be many times larger for no visible gain.
PNG keeps the edges, not the text
Lossless describes the pixels, not the document. A PNG has no text layer, no selection and no search, and the conversion only goes one way. If you need the text back, use OCR. If anyone downstream has to find words in the page, send the PDF alongside the image.
Which resolution
72 DPI suits screens. 150 DPI is the default, good on screen and acceptable in print. 300 DPI is print resolution.
Resolution costs more here than in JPG, because PNG does not throw anything away. An A4 page at 300 DPI is roughly 35 MB of raw pixels before compression, and a busy page stays large afterwards. A forty-page export at 300 DPI is slow and the one most likely to exhaust a phone browser. Pages are rendered and encoded one at a time, which helps a long export finish.
Why the pages have a white background
A PDF page has no background of its own. Pages are drawn onto white first, so the exported image looks like the page and not like a transparent sheet that turns black on a dark surface. Need photographs or scans instead? PDF to JPG gives much smaller files.
