Excel to PDF

A spreadsheet has no pages until something decides where they end.

This tool uploads your file for conversion and deletes the temporary copy when the request finishes. What happens to your files

This tool uploads your file to a server to convert it.

Your file is uploaded to a server for this conversion. It is written to a temporary directory, used, and deleted before the response is sent — within seconds, in the same request. It is never written to a database, an object store, or a queue, and it is never logged.

What survives: High, but page breaks follow the sheet's own print setup. A wide sheet with no print area set will split across pages in ways you did not choose.

A quick browser check runs when you start.

How it works

  1. Read the live upload and retention statement.
  2. Choose a spreadsheet and start conversion.
  3. Download the PDF and check sheets, print areas, and page breaks.

Key benefit

Turns workbook print layouts into pages suitable for sharing.

Supported files and key limits

Input: XLSX, XLS, CSV or ODS. Output: PDF.

Hidden sheets, unsupported fonts, and poorly configured print areas can change the output.

Set the print area first

Check Excel’s print preview before converting. Set the print area, orientation, and scaling there—the converter follows those saved settings. If it looks wrong in the preview, it will look wrong here.

A wide sheet with no print area is not scaled down to fit. It is cut into vertical strips, so columns A to H land on page one and columns I to L on page four, after all the rows. Whoever reads it has to hold two pages side by side to see one row. In Excel, set the print area and landscape orientation under Page Layout, and set the width to 1 page under Scale to Fit. Then save and convert.

CSV files carry no formatting

A CSV has no column widths, fonts, print area or header row, so the converter has nothing to follow. Long text can be cut off in a default-width column. If the CSV is something you need to hand over, open it in a spreadsheet first, widen the columns, set the print area and save it as XLSX.

Formulas become results

A PDF stores results, not calculations. The recipient sees the figures without the formulas behind them, which is often why a PDF is wanted. It also means the PDF cannot be audited the way the workbook can. Check charts, comments and any hidden sheets in the result instead of assuming they came across.

Uploading a spreadsheet of client figures

This tool uploads the file, converts it, and deletes the temporary copy when the request finishes. If the workbook is too sensitive for that, Excel and LibreOffice can both export a PDF on your own machine. The privacy page lists which PDFOak tools upload.
